GA Motor

GA16DE

The GA16DE can be made to fit the K11 with the least amount of modification in comparison with other similar Nissan motors. If the water pump is replaced with an electric water pump, the chassis rail will not need to be cut into to make the engine fit. The RHS & rear?engine mounts have to be modified to fit the GA engine, with the gearbox retained in it's original position. See gearbox section for deatils of RS5F30A, RS5F31A & RS5F31V.

  • 1596cc
  • Bore 76mm
  • Stroke 88mm
  • cast iron block, aluminium head

There are three versions of the GA16DE as follows

UK spec

Using a CG style throttlebody/afm/idle control, this is the lowest power option but also simplest to fit. It is very similar to the Japan spec GA15DE.

  • from N14 & N15? Almera, P10 Primera
  • 99PS = 73kW @ 000rpm
  • kgm = Nm @ 000rpm
  • CR :1

1991-1996 spec

In all other markets the GA16DE had variable inlet cam phasing, traditional throttle & plenum, and remote mounted MAF.

  • from N14, B13
  • 35mm? bore cast aluminium MAF
  • aluminium (or pressed steel)? rockercover
  • 110PS = 81kW @ 6000rpm
  • 15kgm = 147Nm @ 4000rpm
  • CR 9.5:1

1996-1999 spec

  • from N15, B14
  • 80mm? bore black plastic MAF
  • black plastic rockercover
  • 120PS = 88kW @ 6400rpm
  • 14.8kgm = 145Nm @ 4400rpm
  • CR 9.9:1

SR motor

All aluminium construction, for swapping into the K11 this is the heaviest, largest, most powerful, commonly performed swap.

There are many different versions & spec.

SR16VE

  • 1596cc
  • Bore 86mm
  • Stroke 68.7mm

SR18DE

  • 1838cc
  • Bore 82.5mm
  • Stroke 86mm

SR20DE SR20VE SR20DET SR20VET

  • 1998cc
  • Bore 86mm
  • Stroke 86mm
  • Rod length 136.3mm\ There are many gearbox & ratio options, all will require custom mounts. A viscous option is recommended and given the light weight of a K11, a tall gearset is probably a good idea.
  • RS5F32A, RS5F32V (2800,3000, 3400) N14 N15 P10 P11 U14
  • RS5F50A, RS5F50V (2500) Bluebird U12 U13 larger input shaft & CV's than 32
  • RS5F70A, post 1998 P11 Primera, stronger than 32
  • RS6F51A Six speed P12 Primera 20V

Numbers in brackets are rpm in 5th@100km/h\ In terms of a front drive swap, the motors can be placed two categories

SR16VE, SR18DE, SR20DE, SR20VE

SR20DE P10, P11, E-HU14 SSS limited

  • 150PS = 110kW @ 6400rpm (highest power front drive spec)
  • 19kgm = 186Nm @ 4800rpm
  • CR 10:1

SR20VE P12

  • 204PS = 150kW @ 7200rpm
  • 21kgm = 206Nm @ 5200rpm
  • CR 11:1

It's been done plenty of times in Taiwan & UK. Pictures tell 1000 words

SR20DET, SR20VET

SR20DET W11

  • 230PS = 169kW @ 6000rpm
  • 28kgm = 275Nm @ 3600rpm
  • CR 8.5:1

SR20VET T30 X-trail GT

  • 280PS = 206kW @ 6400rpm
  • 31.5kgm = 309Nm @ 3200rpm
  • CR 9:1

As above but with the added spce requirement of a turbo & complecation of where to stick the intercooler. Consider front mount vs top mount vs water-air. Water-air is more flexible & requires less space for front mount piping.

QR motor

  • QR25DE used in the USA Sentra with 6spd gearbox. It replaced the SR20DE. By comparison is is more compact, lightweight diecast, QR25DE 13 percent lighter and 30mm shorter than the SR20DE. It runs balancer shafts in the sump, which can be removed in order to reduced rotating mass with apparently no detrimental effect.

QR motors are also used in the X-trail, primera, teana, avenir, wingroad.

QR20DE

  • 1998cc
  • Bore 89mm
  • Stroke 80.3mm
  • PS = 110kW @ 000rpm
  • kgm = 200Nm @ 00rpm
  • CR 9.9:1

QR25DE

  • 2488cc
  • Bore 89mm
  • Stroke 100mm
  • PS = 130kW @ 6000rpm
  • kgm = 244Nm @ 4000rpm
  • CR 9.5:1

QR25DE 2007+ SE-R Spec_V QR25DE 2002 X trail

More recently, in the USA Nissan SE-R Spec V 2007+ the QR25DE generates 200 hp (150 kW) @ 6600 rpm and 180 ft-lbf (240 N-m) of torque @ 5200 rpm. The crankshaft comes fully balanced allowing removal of the counter-shafts built into the older style QR25. Among the Spec V engine features are use of a unique resin intake manifold and dual branch exhaust manifold; revised piston crown shape to support its 10.5:1 compression; iridium tipped spark plugs for improved combustion characteristics; and a revised cam shaft profile, reinforced connecting rods and 8-counterweight crankshaft to achieve a higher redline limit of 7,000 rpm. It has a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission and optional Helical Limited-Slip Differential.

QG Motor

The QG motor is potentially related to the GA motor given it's identical stroke, cast iron block and it's role as a replacement for the GA motor. As such, it may also be a relatively easy fit.

QG18DE

  • 1769cc
  • Bore 80mm
  • Stroke 88mm

Standard version

  • Power 94kw(126hp)@6000rpm
  • Torque 174Nm@2400rpm

  • 8% lighter than QR20DE (QR20DE is lighter & shorter length than SR)
  • 37% improvement in fuel consumption over QR20DE (QR better than SR)
  • 5-10% torque improvement at low to medium speeds compared with QR20DE

A detuned version, with 133 PS (98 kW) instead of 137 (101), was added to the new Bluebird Sylphy in late 2006. In the new Qashqai and C-Platform Sentra the MR20DE produces 140 hp (104 kW) @ 5100 rpm and 193 N-m (142 ft-lbf) @ 4800 rpm

Engine Layout Changes

FR Layout

The change to FR layout for a K11 likely requires cutting of the floorpan to accomodate a RWD gearbox and fabrication of transmission tunnel, amongst other things. It has been done before with such engines as the SR18DET [1]

MR Layout

While not solely RWD, In the late 1990s, a K11 was adapted into a VQ30 mid-engined 4WD configuration to race in the Trophée Andros, the French ice racing series. Drivers who raced this car include Érik Comas, Philippe Gache, Stéphane Peterhansel and Emmanuel Collard.
